How to Prepare for the OGT: Ohio Graduation Test in Mathematics
by Barrons

This is a 374-page paperback manual measuring 8 inches by 11 inches. Following a brief introduction to the OGT and what it takes to pass the math portion, the book moves into five chapters that address the state-mandated benchmarks 10th grade students in Ohio are expected to achieve. These chapters can be studied in any order and each one concludes with 12 to 28 practice OGT problems focusing on the particular benchmark addressed in that chapter. A seventh chapter is devoted to three sample Ohio Graduation Tests in math. Students who are confident of their abilities, may want to skip the instructional/benchmark chapters and go straight to the sample tests to gauge their own aptitudes. An appendix that appears at the end of the book contains lessons on how to use the OGT Scientific Calculator that is a required accessory for anyone taking the test. It also contains tips on becoming familiar with the calculator before entering the test room. At the end of the book is a reference sheet with basic formulas and a glossary of math terms students will need to know to move through the test easily in the prescribed two and a half-hour testing period.

How to Prepare for the OGT: Ohio Graduation Test in Mathematics

Pluses: This guide is flexible in that it can be used to review only a student’s math “weak points” whether they be fractions, algebra, geometry, etc. Student who are confident of their abilities can go straight to the sample tests and skip the instructional and review chapters. If they don’t score well, they can go back and review the sections that need attention. This study guide is based on the philosophy that to be adept at math, a student needs to work lots of problems. And lots of problems is just what the guide contains – about 800 to be exact.

Minuses: The guide’s strong point is also its weakest point – 800 sample math problems. Although many of these are accompanied by graphs and drawings, the book is still “problem heavy.” It’s pages and pages of math questions! The first several pages that provide direction to teachers and students who are preparing to take the test are very valuable. Otherwise, unless a student is really into math, they might find the manual ponderous.
