This 156-page personalized softback workbook accompanies a MaxSkill Trainer CD to help students prepare for the Ohio Graduation Test in reading and writing English. The book’s introduction is step-by-step directions on how to install the accompanying software in a personal computer. The software can only be activated once, according to the directions.
The workbook’s 15 units include reading comprehension exercises based on passages from classic literature, poetry and plays; vocabulary exercises; setting questions; interpretation exercises and exercises of structure related to poetry. Additional units delve into interpretation of editorial cartoons, as well as English grammar and usage. All questions within the 15 units are multiple choice, with a separate answer sheet provided that students can use to avoid marking in the workbook itself. The answer sheet can be copied so that multiple students can use a single workbook – a plus for cash-strapped school districts.
The final review section provides users an opportunity to practice written responses to a variety of questions related to the 15 units. Ample space is provided in the workbook for the written answers.
The workbook concludes with an answer key to all 180 questions. Answers include not only the correct response to the question, but also an explanation of why the right answer is correct.

Minuses – No where on the workbook or CD does it say these tools are aligned with Ohio’s academic standards, benchmarks and grade-level indicators. In fact, there’s no authorship noted anywhere on the manual – nor is there any tie to education in Ohio at all.
The workbook needs a more appealing design and more illustrations. The extensive reading passages make it appear text heavy. Because the answer key is at the rear of the book, users will need to search and “page” to come up with correct responses. The answer key itself appears somewhat hard to follow. If the software doesn’t work, there’s a “Plan B” for activating the CD that involves going to MaxSkill.com on the Internet – but it looks complicated. The biggest negative is the single-use feature of the software. Once it is installed on one computer, it cannot be installed on another.
