This is a 79-page softbound workbook and accompanying CD designed to prepare students for the Ohio Graduation Test in social studies. The personalized (user’s name comes on the cover) workbook begins with instructions on how to install the CD in a home computer. It can only be installed on one computer. Once it is installed, it cannot be moved to another computer.
The 15 units that make up the substance of the book contain 150 multiple-choice questions that address specific academic standards. Those standards include America’s development, exploration and divergence; the impact of the influences of intellectual and religious thought on American political systems; provisions of essential documents of the U.S. government; events, causes and effects of the Civil War Era; the impact of the Great Depression/New Deal on American life; the social and political effects of WW I; industrialization and urbanization; the Era of Expansion; American political and social reform and the emergence of American culture; the American Revolution; settlement of the American West and U.S. involvement in WW II.
A separate answer sheet is provided for the multiple-choice questions, allowing students to complete the units without marking in the workbook itself. The answer sheet can be photocopied so that one workbook can be used by any number of students.
A written response training with 30 short-answer questions completes the MaxSkill review guide. The questions cover the same academic standards as the multiple choice units. Ample space is provided in the workbook for users to write out their answers.
The workbook concludes with an answer key that covers both the multiple-choice and written response questions. Not only does the key contain the correct answers, but also an explanation of why those answers are right.

Minuses – There’s no indication on the review guide or the CD that materials covered by MaxSkill are aligned with Ohio’s academic standards, benchmarks and grade-level indicators. In fact, the system’s authors and designers are not indicated anywhere, calling into question its validity.
The workbook has a lackluster design with a decided absence of interesting graphics and illustrations. Although it is a quick read, it could use a livelier typeface and layout.
Since the CD can only be installed in one computer, it is limited in its versatility and use by multiple people – a definite minus. Installing it can be another problem – getting a replacement CD is another.
The answer key is at the rear of the workbook, meaning a user has to page back and forth to use it. Moreover, the key is somewhat hard to read and use.
