Passing the OGT Practice Test Self-Study Workbook, 2 nd Edition…

$16.95

This 300-page softbound workbook is designed as an overview of the core subjects addressed by the Ohio Graduation Test: reading, writing, social studies, science and mathematics. It is part of the “Show What You Know” series. It can be used by students as a substitute for the four individual subject workbooks in the series – a cost-saving factor. Or, it may be used in addition to these workbooks.

Like other workbook/study guides in this series, this book aims to refresh students’ memories about what they’ve learned in the first 10 years of school and build self-confidence for facing the major academic hurdle that the OGT represents. It also helps students identify the areas where they need to focus their study efforts.

The book begins with detailed chapters regarding “test anxiety” and test-taking strategies. Written by Bram, a professor of psychiatry, these chapters talk straight to teenagers in an effort to identify and deal with the stress that accompanies the OGT. The test-taking hints and tips use common sense to help students perform at their maximum.

Subsequent chapters focus on the major areas of the OGT and are condensed versions of material found in the individual “Show What You Know” workbooks on language arts, science, social studies and math. Each begins with a brief introduction on the subject and a list of Ohio’s Academic Content Standards. A chart follows that shows the number and types of questions on the test and how they are weighted in the overall score. Each chapter concludes with two OGT practice test'>OGT practice tests designed to simulate what students will encounter on the real thing. Each 40-question practice test ends with a key that encompasses not only the answers, but also academic benchmarks, standards, grade-level indicators and keywords for that subject. A correlation chart to help students identify weak points follows each practice test.

Passing the Ohio Graduation Test Student Self-Study Workbook

Pluses – This condensed, single-workbook version of the “Show What You Know” series is a very cost-effective way for cash-strapped school districts to help their students prepare for the OGT. One book at $16.95 takes the place of four at that cost or more each. It contains the extensive chapters on “test anxiety” and test-taking strategies that are found in the other workbooks – in fact, it appears to be the same text word for word. This is helpful information that is unique to the “Show What You Know” series.

Like others in this series of workbooks, this study guide aims to help students assess and review what they already know so they can focus attention on the areas where they need help. That is a departure from most OGT prep tools that simply prepare students for the testing experience.

Minuses – The book is loaded with information, making it somewhat text heavy and difficult to use. While it purports to be a workbook that students could use on their own, in reality it would be difficult for most students to wade through the benchmarks, standards and related charts without the help of a professional educator to guide them. The practice tests in each subject are the same ones that appear in the individual workbooks.
