Passing The Ohio Graduation Test in Reading…

$23

This is a 342-page workbook from the American Book Company created to help students review and prepare for the Ohio Graduation Test in reading English. It is based on testing standards established by the Ohio Department of Education. The book is divided into six sections and the sections divided into chapters. Chapters cover topics like reading comprehension, author’s purpose, recognizing persuasive techniques, using resource materials and literary devices. Each chapter contains quizzes and lessons on the topic covered. Like similar workbooks on the market, Passing the Ohio Graduation Test in Reading contains a page of test-taking tips and advice. Unlike similar products, this workbook begins with a diagnostic test that allows students and teachers the chance to evaluate the user’s strengths and weaknesses in the subject at the outset. A separate manual contains the answers to the workbook’s quizzes and lessons, as well as the two practice OGT tests that appear at the end of the book. The same manual also contains a “chart of standards” that allows teachers to make a more precise diagnosis of student needs and assignments.

Editors’ Review:
Passing the Ohio Graduation Test in Reading

Pluses – This workbook is jam-packed with information, quizzes and sample tests. The diagnostic test at the beginning is a very good feature that will help teachers and parents perform an assessment of the student’s basic abilities in reading. A separate answer key for teachers/parents keeps students from “cheating” by peeking at correct answers. Lessons contain test-taking tips for better student performance.

Minuses – There’s so much information here and the book is so heavy in text, that it’s almost difficult to comprehend everything. There are graphics, but all are in black and white and fail to break up the book’s text-heavy design. The book’s four authors are named, but none appear to have a connection to education in Ohio. Two are Georgia educated; one is from James Madison University and one is a graduate of Arizona State University. The book is pricey - $23 – more than twice as much as many competitor workbooks on the market.
