Passing The Ohio Graduation Test In Science by Dawn Heineman, Michelle Gunter and Colleen Pintozzi…

$23

This is a 424-page softbound workbook published by American Book Company as a help to students who are learning or reviewing material for the Ohio Graduation Test. The book begins with a brief introduction to the OGT, how it is formulated and organized. There’s an added explanation of Ohio’s academic content standards in science and what students are expected to know about science in order to pass the OGT.

A diagnostic test, patterned after the real OGT, follows that should help students, teachers and parents identify the science skills that students have mastered and those that will need more practice. The test’s 38 questions are numbered, and the numbering format correlates to an evaluation chart at the end of the test that directs users to the chapter in the book where answers can be found.

The next 19 chapters are the “meat” of the workbook, focusing on various subjects that support the academic standards outlined in the beginning. They are: safety, equipment and scientific measurement; scientific method and communication; structure of matter; properties of matter; basics of life; chemical reactions; DNA and heredity; evolutionary theory; forces and motion; energy, work and power; waves; the universe; earth systems and processes; meteorology and climate; interdependence of living organisms; energy flow through ecosystems; human effects of ecosystems; historical perspectives in science; and science, technology and society. The standard covered is identified at the beginning of the chapter.

Each chapter is divided into sections that address a particular scientific topic, with a review of terms and short exercise at the end. Graphs, diagrams and illustrations are provided where appropriate to help users better understand the material. Review exercises contain a variety of question types, including multiple choice, short answer and extended response.

The workbook concludes with two OGT practice test'>OGT practice tests (each with 38 questions) that emulate what students will face on the “real thing.” Answers to the OGT practice test'>OGT practice tests and the exercises found at the end of each section are available in a completely separate answer key, similar to those that accompany each workbook in the “Passing The Ohio Graduation Test” series.

Editors’ Review:
Passing the Ohio Graduation Test in Science

Pluses – Like other workbooks in the “Passing The Ohio Graduation Test” series, this science workbook is a very large volume with extensive and detailed information. Although it is very text heavy, the illustrations do help to break up the monotony. The diagnostic test, a staple of this workbook series, is a helpful tool that not only enables teachers and parents better assess learning “weak spots,” but also builds self-confidence in students by demonstrating what they already know. Teachers may also value the chapter sections which could serve as the basis for individual lesson plans, using the reviews and exercises at the end of each as daily quizzes. The completely separate answer key is another plus for both parents and teachers.

Minuses – The size of this workbook is both a plus and a minus. While it is comprehensive, many students may find it intimidating and overwhelming. Except for Pintozzi, none of the authors appear to have any kind of an Ohio connection. And her specialty seems to be writing math study aids, not science ones. In fact, the authors all appear to be Georgia based. The content is aligned with Ohio’s academic standards, but there’s no mention of benchmarks or grade-level indicators.
