This 311-page softbound workbook published by the American Book Company aims to prepare high school students for the Ohio Graduation Test in writing English. The preface says it will help students who are learning or reviewing writing strategies and compositions for mastery of writing skills. It notes, the materials are based on the revised 2004 content standards and curriculum for writing published by the Ohio Department of Education. The book is divided into six sections and the sections are subdivided into chapters, each focused on a different type of writing (expository, business, persuasive, etc.). Literary responses, proofreading, diction and composition writing are also covered. Like other workbooks in the “Passing the Ohio Graduation Test” series, the book begins with a page of test-taking tips and advice. Best of all, a diagnostic test at the outset is designed to help teachers and parents better assess the student’s basic abilities, revealing both strengths and weaknesses.
Two actual OGT practice test'>OGT practice tests in writing are found at the end of the workbook. An answer key for both the quizzes found in the workbook chapters and the OGT practice test'>OGT practice tests comes separate from the workbook for the convenience of parents and teachers.

Minuses – The workbook contains a lot of information and may appear intimidating to many. The authors are named, but like other workbooks in this series, they appear to have little connection to teaching in Ohio. In fact, the book notes these same individuals have written similar study guides on passing high school graduation exams in 11 other states. Cost is another disadvantage. At $23, “Passing the Ohio Graduation Test in Writing” costs about twice as much as competitor workbooks like “Roadmap To The Ohio Graduation Test in Reading.”
