A 273-page soft-bound 8-inch by 11-inch workbook by the Princeton Review which manufactures other study guides for standardized tests (note: Princeton Review is not associated with Princeton University). This is the company that also produces the list of “10 Best Party Schools in the U.S.,” etc. It begins with a short overview of the OGT and a brief “how to use this guide” section. A section with general test-taking tips and advice follows, with insight on how to complete both multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Fifteen lessons are the “heart” of the workbook - each based on the Ohio Education Department’s benchmarks and academic indicators. Each lesson contains a vocabulary review and a sample test question. Instruction on how to approach the question follows, along with a second question that allows the student to practice on his or her own. The answer key to the lessons is near the end of the book, along with two actual OGT reading tests that the student can use to prepare for the “real thing.”

Minuses – The introduction says the authors reviewed the OGT in reading before writing the workbook. However, this is obviously not the work of Ohio classroom teachers and some people may have a problem with that. The cover says the content was reviewed and approved by Ohio teachers – otherwise it’s strictly the product of out-of-staters. Beyond the authorship, the book is sadly lacking in pictures and any other type of interesting graphics. The answer key is so far from the lesson section, users may have a hard time keeping their place while flipping back and forth.
