This is a 231-page guide billed as a “student self-study workbook” for grade 10. It is designed to help high school sophomores assess what they’ve learned in 10 years of schooling so they can adequately prepare for the Ohio Graduation Test – a major hurdle to obtaining a diploma in the state. A professional psychologist was a major contributor to the workbook, beginning it with a lengthy chapter on identifying and dealing with “test anxiety.” A chapter on test-taking strategies follows, providing tips and hints for achieving the best possible performance on the OGT.
Additional chapters delve into Ohio’s Academic Content Standards for 9th and 10th grade social studies, including all the benchmarks and grade-level indicators a student should know before taking the OGT. They also show users what types of questions they will see on the test and how those questions will be scored. A tutorial with multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-response questions follows, each aligned with a specific benchmark. An answer key is provided with each question, supplying not only the correct response, but also an analysis of why the incorrect answers are wrong.
Two full-length OGT “practice tests” in social studies (each with 40 questions) make up the last chapters of the workbook. Answer keys that show the correct responses for the practice tests are included, as is a chart that aligns answers with the benchmarks and keywords.
A skills chart with each practice test helps students identify additional areas where they need to focus their review efforts.

The chapter on reducing “test anxiety” is very detailed and helpful and contains good advice on how students can identify this condition in themselves and their friends. While many OGT preparation workbooks include hints and tips for test taking, few addresses the emotional and psychological stresses that accompany a major academic hurdle like the graduation test. That feature is unique to this series
Answers to questions found on the tutorial are at the bottom of each page (in smaller type) so there’s no fumbling for the answer key. Answers to the practice test questions follow each test.
Minuses – Like similar products on the market, this workbook includes a large amount of information – so much that it is sometimes confusing. While it purports to be a tool that students could use on their own to prepare for the OGT, in reality the average student would be lost among all the benchmark and standards charts without the help and direction of a professional educator. There is no specific author named for the book, although it says it was written by teachers. Only a contributor and the company’s publishing staff are identified by name.
The workbook is also text heavy in places, although the tutorial has interesting graphics and is very easy to use.
