This online preparation tool to help students achieve success on the five-part Ohio Graduation Test promises to make the study process a “fun” experience. Users purchase access to Study Island using a credit card, then set up a user name and password for easy sign on. From the main page, students can click on the tab of a particular subject they want to review – math, science, social studies, reading or writing – and begin a series of up to 10-question lessons in topics aligned with Ohio’s academic standards. The particular standard addressed will appear at the right of the computer screen. A pre-test allows students, teachers and parents to assess basic ability and find out where the weak spots lie. All Study Island questions are multiple choice and students find out immediately upon making a selection which answer is the right one – along with an explanation of why that answer is correct. Once An entire lesson is completed, users are immediately scored. A feature with each lesson explains the importance of the topic and allows users to submit personal comments. Students can answer lessons in a straight “test” format, or as a video “game,” such as bouncing ball, snake, canon, splat or space. There are eleven “games” from which to choose. Students who do not want to study a lesson on their computer may use the “print out” option to obtain a hard copy set of questions. Once a full set of lessons are completed, students can take the post-test to better judge their own improvement.
Additional features of Study Island include a messaging center where students and teachers can communicate with each other and a “help” page. The “help” page allows students to analyze their own performances and see how they stack up to others taking preparing for the OGT. Additional “help” page features include instructions on how to play the Study Island games. A tutorial is designed to help students, parents and teacher better use the program. Users can troubleshoot, using the appropriate tab, and contact Study Island staff for more extensive problems. The contact feature allows students, parents or teachers to ask questions of the sales or support staff via e-mail or toll-free telephone number.

Minuses – Study Island says it’s aligned with Ohio’s academic standards, but that is where its relationship to Ohio schools appears to end. There’s no credit given to Ohio educators for preparing the test. The multiple-choice questions are quick, fun to answer and supply a good amount of instant gratification, but there’s no allowance made for short-answer or extended response questions which make up an important aspect of the OGT. There’s no way a student will obtain any practice with these types of questions using Study Island. It’s a bit hard to grasp how the “games” are played, although there are extensive directions for each one. Beyond the pre-test and post-test, teachers and parents have no way to monitor a student’s progress while using Study Island – another negative.
