This pack of 50 flashcards to help prepare students for the Ohio Graduation Test in reading and writing English is published by Hollandays Publishing. They are about half the cost of the “Pass In A Flash” competitor flashcards published by Show What You Know Publishing. The cards are simple to use with a single concept or question on the front of each - and the answer on the back. The cards measure 4 inches by 6 inches and feature black and white text on uncoated stock. One card has tips for students to use while taking the reading and writing test; the flip side has tips for parents to use in helping their child prepare for the test. Among the advice for parents is an encouragement to purchase companion OGT study aids from Hollandays, including software and a workbook. A toll-free number is provided for easy ordering.

Pluses – Simple design and very large type mean these flashcards could be used by a group of students at one time. They are small enough to be handled easily.
Minuses – At about half of the cost of the competitor flashcards, the “Skills You Need” cards are worth only about half as much. There’s no author or editor mentioned. And no place does it say the content is aligned with Ohio’s academic standards and benchmarks. While the cover says reading and writing skills are covered, in reality the cards appear to focus only on writing skills. There’s no mention of reading comprehension and no cards have lessons to cover that important aspect of mastering the language.
Like other flashcards, “The Skills You Need” cards come only in a shrink-wrapped package so there’s no way to store them conveniently and easily. It would be easy for the cards to get scattered, lost and out of sequence with very much handling. They are uncoated and would like get dirty or damaged easily.
