This package of 50 4-inch by 6-inch flashcards published by Hollandays Corporation is designed to prepare high school students for the science portion of the Ohio Graduation Test. It is necessary to pass the test in order to obtain a high school diploma in the state. Each of the 50 cards has a question or series of questions on one side; the flip side holds the answer(s). Questions appear in black text on white background on uncoated stock. Color is not used anywhere on any card. Subjects covered include biology, physics, chemistry, meteorology and ecology – in no particular order. The package also includes advice and tips for students who are practicing and studying for the test, as well as hints for parents who are helping their children prepare. Parents are encouraged to purchase added study resources such as computer software and a workbook by calling a toll-free number.
Minuses – In no place does it say the flashcards are aligned with Ohio’s academic standards and benchmarks, calling into question the flashcards’ authorship. No author is named. While the questions seem logical and informative, there’s no indication they contain the kind of information students need to pass the science OGT. While The Skills You Need Science Flashcards cost about half the price of competitor cards by Show What You Know Publishing, their construction is less professional. The uncoated stock would likely become dirty and worn with much handling. Like competitor flashcards, The Skills You Need cards come shrink wrapped with no holder or way to keep them organized. It would be easy to get them out of order, scattered or lost.
