Meeting The Challenge: The Ohio Graduation Test Study Guide In Science by Cindy Weikart… $16.95

This 275-page softbound workbook published by Ohio-based Orange Frazer Press is designed to provide classroom teachers with plans and materials to help their students prepare for the Ohio Graduation Test. Indicators for grades nine and ten from Ohio’s new academic content standards in science were used in writing the guide. Like its companion study guide in mathematics, the book begins with a chart that correlates its content with the state academic standards, benchmarks and indicators. Like other study guides in this series, the book begins with several pages of general test-taking tips and hints.

The heart of the workbook is six units covering the six major sections of Ohio’s academic content standards in science that are addressed by the OGT: life science, physical science, earth science, scientific ways of knowing, scientific inquiry and science and technology. Units are divided into lessons that hone on a particular benchmark. Each lesson begins with a “focus” question and a list of information items that a student will need to master before tackling the OGT. There’s also a list of vocabulary words and facts for students to memorize.

Teachers are encouraged to use the guided practice found in each lesson as an in-class exercise, then assign the independent practice as homework. A practice test that includes multiple choice, short-answer and extended response questions comes at the end of each lesson and is aimed at simulating what students will find on the “real thing.”

The workbook concludes with a list of common prefixes and suffixes, a periodic table, oxidation numbers and a glossary of scientific terms.

The Ohio Graduation Test Study Guide The Skills you need Science

Pluses – Like other workbooks in the “Meeting The Challenge” series, this science study guide is well organized and easy to follow. Science teachers could use the individual lessons to formulate their own classroom lesson plans. The guided practice found in each lesson is ideal for in-class exercise, while the independent practice could be homework. The workbook’s author is a veteran Ohio science teacher who actually signed the introduction and provided sensible advice for test takers. The tables and glossary which appear at the end of the book are an extra measure of help.

Minuses – Like the math workbook in this series, there is no answer key provided for either the guided or independent practice sections, nor does the book direct users to a Web site for answers. Apparently, the author assumed a science teacher would already know the answers. That feature would make the workbook difficult to use by homeschoolers or students outside a structured classroom. Answers are provided at the closure of each lesson for the focus questions found at the beginning. These are the only answers provided with the book.
