This 145-page softbound workbook aims to help students review the Ohio language arts curriculum for grades 8-10 so they will perform better on the Ohio Graduation Test. Formatted differently from other workbooks in the “Meeting The Challenge” series, this language arts study guide begins with a personal skill improvement goals section that encourages students to set individual improvement goals, whatever their natural ability level.
The book is divided into eight lessons that address the most challenging topics found on the OGT in writing and reading English. Lessons cover the following topics: reading for information, persuasion, communicating with graphics, point of view, setting, character and plot, literary devices, theme and style. Each lesson includes exercises in reading and writing with multiple choice, short-answer and extended-response questions. Activities associated with each lesson are designed to prepare students for what they will encounter on the real OGT. The workbook concludes with a glossary of reading and writing terms and a simulated OGT in reading that serves as a rehearsal for the real thing.

Minuses – Except for a disclaimer on the back cover of the study guide, there’s no mention of its contents being aligned with Ohio’s academic standards, benchmarks and grade-level indicators. Instead, it emphasizes review and practice of the most challenging topics found on the OGT. While the table of contents appears well organized, the workbook itself is a bit confusing. The layout is hard to follow and the vocabulary exercises in each lesson seem to have no relation to the content.
